Do-it-yourself adjustment of plastic windows

WiDo Do-it-yourself adjustment of plastic windows

Thanks to the thoughtful design of the fittings, the adjustment of plastic windows with your own hands is quite possible. Moreover, it must be carried out periodically — even the heaviest shutters during intensive operation can deform over time, which will lead to problems in opening and closing the plastic window. Another possible problem is a decrease in the density of the sash pressing against the frame, which is also eliminated by adjustment.

If you need to adjust plastic windows, the instructions for troubleshooting various problems will differ from hardware complexes of different manufacturers. But the general principles of adjusting the fittings to align the sash or ensure tight clamping remain — because if the plastic window closes poorly or blows out of it, you can try to cope with the problem yourself.

What will be needed to adjust plastic windows?

The plastic window is adjusted using the simplest tools. Used:

  • Screwdrivers — cross and flat. Some hardware manufacturers use non-standard screws, so you may need a screwdriver with a triangular nozzle or a nozzle in the form of an asterisk.
  • Pliers.
  • The key is hexagonal (4 mm).

If, together with the adjustment, you plan to perform window maintenance (this is the optimal scheme), then you will also need:

  • A dust removal brush (an old toothbrush will do).
  • Toothpicks.
  • Cotton swabs.
  • A sponge or rag to remove grease residue.
  • Oil for accessories.
  • Lubricant for the seal.

Repair of a loose handle of a plastic window

The handle of the metal-plastic window, which drives the locking mechanism, may become loose over time. To fix this problem, you need to:

  • Lift and rotate at an angle of 980 ° the decorative plastic cover that covers the base of the handle.
  • Tighten the mounting screws that hold the handle to secure it in the socket.
  • If there are cracks on the base of the handle or the edges of the pin are erased, the river will have to be replaced.

Adjustment of the hinges of the plastic window

To align the sash, eliminate distortions and solve other problems, adjustment loops are used. There are screws on the hinges of the plastic window, which almost all manufacturers have designed for a standard 4 mm hex key. The rotation of these screws makes it possible to shift the window sash in different directions.

The main reasons for the misalignment of plastic window sashes:

  • Improper operation of the structure.
  • Deformation of the leaf or its individual parts.
  • Deformation of hardware elements under the weight of the window sash.
  • Loosening of the hardware screws.

For different models of fittings, the adjustment screws on the hinges are placed and work differently. Therefore, before starting to adjust the window, it is worth studying the scheme of the model of accessories that is installed on your window. Performing all adjustment operations. It is worth following these recommendations:

  • The screws are usually hidden behind decorative plastic linings. These pads need to be carefully removed, and after the adjustment is completed, they are installed in place — they protect the hinges from dust.
  • When adjusting the screws, you need to rotate carefully — no more than half a turn at a time. So you can fix the direction of movement of the sash and shift it exactly the right distance, without creating an additional load on the mechanism.

The work is carried out according to this scheme:

Horizontal adjustment

For horizontal displacement, we adjust both the upper and lower loops:

  • When adjusting the lower hinge, the sash can be either closed or open. By rotating the adjusting screw counterclockwise, we lower the lower corner, which is located on the side opposite to the loop. By rotating clockwise, we raise this angle.
  • To adjust the flap with the upper loop, it needs to be opened. Then we install the hex key into the socket screw. To lower the opposite corner of the sash, rotate the screw counterclockwise, to lift it clockwise.

Vertical adjustment

To adjust the vertical position of the plastic window sash, an adjustment screw is used at the end of the lower hinge. With the help of a hex key, we:

  • We raise the angle at which the loop is installed by rotating the screw clockwise, or
  • We lower this angle by rotating the screw counterclockwise.

It should be borne in mind that with the help of screws, you can adjust the position of the sash by only 2-3 mm (maximum). To eliminate most of the distortions caused by wear or operation of the window under load, this is quite enough.

Adjusting the sash clamp

Accessories are responsible for the effective clamping of the sash of the plastic window around the perimeter. There may be two reasons for adjusting the sash by the clamp:

  1. Due to insufficient clamping, tightness decreases and drafts occur.
  2. Excessive clamping leads to the fact that the sash does not close well — the trunnions and the response bars touch each other.

Pay attention! The place of the pin hook on the bar is located on the traces on the metal. The area of insufficient clamping is determined by a draft using a candle flame or a lighter. In the cold season, it is much easier to find this area.

To adjust the clamping density, eccentrics are used on the end part of the sash of the plastic window. The rotation of the eccentrics is performed using a hex key or pliers. Some models of accessories are equipped with spring—loaded eccentrics - to rotate the part, you need to pull a little on yourself.

To adjust the clamp, you need:

  • Open a window.
  • Shift the eccentrics so that the wide part of the part is directed towards the seam of the sash — this will strengthen the clamping.
  • Or shift the eccentrics so that the wide part of the part is directed in the opposite direction — this will weaken the clamp.

After each operation, you need to try to close the flap and check whether the desired result has been achieved.

If there are no drafts and blowing — it is not necessary to put too strong pressure. This will lead to deformation of the seal: it will be constantly in a compressed state, and its elasticity will decrease. Over time, this will cause drafts to appear, which can only be eliminated by installing a new seal.

It is possible to adjust the clamping not only by eccentrics, but also by hinges on the plastic window. For this:

  • Open the window — remove it from the lock and set the handle to the ventilation mode.
  • We insert a hexagon into the adjusting screw on the lower surface of the scissors.
  • To loosen the clamp in case of problems with closing, rotate the screw counterclockwise.
  • To strengthen the clamping and increase the tightness — clockwise.

Calling the wizard to adjust

If you do not have enough experience to adjust the window with your own hands, or you have tried, but the result is far from what you want, then you should contact a master for repairing and configuring PVC windows. He can:

  • Adjust the position of the sash with screws.
  • Eliminate blowing.
  • To align the double-glazed window with linings, shifting the sash in the right direction and eliminating mashing.

Very often — especially in the case of a large mass or a significant size of the sash — this is the only way to eliminate the distortion and ensure stable operation of the fittings.
