How to adjust window fittings: step by step instructions

WiDo How to adjust window fittings: step by step instructions

A special mechanism — window fittings - is responsible for pressing the sash to the frame, as well as for opening and closing the window in various modes. The elements that are responsible for setting up the work of the fittings make it possible to adjust it so that the sash can be easily opened and closed regardless of weight, dimensions and operating conditions.

However, over time, even the most reliable hardware settings can get lost. Therefore, periodically the fittings require adjustment — otherwise problems may arise.:

  • Difficulties with turning the handle
  • Touching the sash by the edges of the frame
  • Draughts and blowouts
  • Extraneous sounds in loops, etc.

In all the cases described, it is necessary to adjust the plastic window. At the same time, with the help of special tools, the optimal settings of the mechanism should be restored so that the sash moves freely again.

Is it possible to adjust the window yourself?

The window mechanism is equipped with several elements that are designed to adjust the position of the sash. To understand where they are located, it is worth finding on the Internet a diagram of the accessories installed in you and studying the manufacturer's recommendations for adjustment.

In addition, with self-adjustment, you will need:

  • A flat screwdriver or a knife with a narrow blade
  • Phillips Screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • L-shaped hexagon wrench

It is also worth stocking up with a duster and grease for processing the mechanism after adjustment.

If the handle is loose

One of the simplest problems that can be solved in just a couple of minutes is a loose handle. In 90% of cases, it's about fixing screws. To solve the problem:

  1. With a flat screwdriver, we lift the decorative overlay on the base of the handle.
  2. Turn it at a right angle.
  3. With a phillips screwdriver, tighten the screws until they stop.

That's all — the handle should hold tight and not wobble.

Pay attention! A crack in the base of the handle is a reason for its replacement: repair or adjustment in this case is impossible.

If the sash is not pressed hard enough against the frame

Insufficiently effective clamping is the reason for the appearance of drafts and blowing around the perimeter of the window. But the opposite situation also occurs — due to strong or uneven clamping, difficulties arise with closing the window or the seal is severely deformed.

If the problem is related to a draft, it is worth finding a place where the clamp has weakened. The problem is localized with a candle or lighter — a stream of cold air will deflect the flame.

To adjust the clamp, locking pins are used, which can be oval or round (with an eccentric). The trunnion is rotated with pliers or a hex key. To adjust the optimal pressure:

  • We open the sash.
  • To strengthen the clamp, rotate the trunnion until the wide part (there may be a mark on it) is directed at the sash surfacing.
  • To loosen the clamp, rotate the trunnion in the opposite direction.
  • If you need to eliminate blowing around the perimeter — "tighten" all the trunnions.

Advice! After adjustment, we open and close the sash several times. This is necessary to check the functionality of the fittings — there is a risk of "overstretching" or "understretching". Also, do not forget that an excessively strong pressure harms the sealer — the elastic contour is deformed and requires replacement much earlier.

In addition, the clamp is also adjustable with the help of screws on hinges. For this:

  • Open the window, setting it to the ventilation mode (you will have to click on the wrong opening lock).
  • On the lower surface of the scissors we find the adjusting screw.
  • With the help of a hex key, we make adjustments: by rotating the screw counterclockwise, we loosen the clamp, by rotating clockwise, we strengthen it.

As in the previous case, be sure to check whether we have adjusted the clamp correctly. To do this, we close the sash and evaluate whether the fittings work easily and whether the draft has disappeared.

If the sash is displaced

The displacement of the sash and its misalignment can be eliminated with the help of adjusting screws. They are located on the hinges of a plastic window and are equipped with slots for a hex key. The sash can warp under its own weight, with intensive operation of the window or with improper installation of the hinges themselves. But in any case, when it is skewed, you need to adjust the position of the part.

When adjusting, we are guided by the following rules:

  • The screws are usually hidden by decorative linings — therefore, to access the adjustment mechanism, the linings must be removed by gently prying with a knife or a flat screwdriver.
  • The power reserve of the screws is quite large, therefore it needs to be "selected" gradually. Do not tighten or release the screw until it stops — after each half turn, close the window and check whether the problem has been fixed. If it only got worse, it means that we turned the screw in the wrong direction.

Raise or lower the sash

You can adjust the vertical position of the sash using the bottom loop. Insert the hex key into the socket screw, then:

  • We lower the sash by rotating the key counterclockwise.
  • Or we lift the sash by rotating in the opposite direction.

Important! Such manipulation can raise the lower corner of the sash, which is closer to the hinge part, by 1-3 mm. This is enough to solve most of the problems.

Align the sash horizontally (eliminate the skew)

For horizontal adjustment of the sash, screws are used on two hinges at once — the upper and lower:

  • The adjusting screw on the side of the lower hinge is responsible for the position of the lower corner on the opposite side of the sash. Counterclockwise rotation lowers this angle, clockwise — raises.
  • The screw on the end of the upper loop adjusts the position of the upper opposite corner. Rotate clockwise — raise the angle, rotate counterclockwise — lower the angle (that is, we move it closer to the frame).

Important! Access to the adjusting screw on the upper hinge can only be obtained when the sash is open.

In the presence of a scheme and minimal skills, the metal-plastic window can really be adjusted with your own hands, eliminating blowing and problems with closing. But in difficult cases, it is worth contacting a master for the repair and adjustment of plastic windows. He will not only cope with the task faster, but will also be able to perform more complex manipulations — for example, he will eliminate a strong distortion of the sash by adjusting the double-glazed window.

In any case, the correct adjustment of the plastic window is the key to its stable operation and your comfort.
