How to adjust the balcony door?

For the manufacture of plastic balcony doors, not a massive door, but a light window profile is used. This is done for an obvious reason — we use the balcony door regularly, and the use of a window profile makes it possible to facilitate the sash as much as possible. The thermal insulation characteristics of the structure and its strength at the same time remain quite sufficient.

But still the rigidity of the window profile is lower than that of the door. Therefore, due to the deformation of the high sash, as well as due to the impact of other design factors, adjustment may be required. Even balcony doors made on the basis of a premium profile and installed according to all the rules need to be adjusted periodically - and it's worth learning how to do it with your own hands.

When does the door need adjustment?

There are several situations in which it may be necessary to adjust the balcony door:

• Drafts and heat losses that occur due to insufficiently strong pressing of the sash to the frame.
• Sagging of the sash under its own weight, which is why its lower edge, when opening and closing, clings to the frame in the threshold area.
• Difficult closing due to the fact that the deformed sash touches the frame in the middle part of the balcony door.

You can eliminate these problems by adjusting the accessories. The possibility of adjustment is provided by the manufacturer, so after the procedure, the balcony door can be used without restrictions.

Setting the optimal clamping force

One of the main functions of the fittings is to press the sash to the frame, which should not only be strong enough, but also uniform around the perimeter of the balcony door. If the clamping force is insufficient, a gap will form through which cold air will enter the room even if the balcony door is closed.

The design of the locking trunnions of the balcony door assumes that, if necessary, the clamp can be strengthened or weakened. This is how it is done:

• The door leaf opens and is installed at a convenient angle.
• If there is a socket for a hexagon in the trunnion, a 4 mm hex key is used. If not, the trunnions are turned with pliers.
• To strengthen the clamping, the eccentric trunnion is rotated so that the risk on the wide part of the eccentric is positioned vertically or (if this is not enough) is facing the sash face.
• The operation is carried out on all locking trunnions of the balcony door.

Changing the position of the trunnions leads to the fact that they are pressed harder against the response bars on the frame. At the same time, it is not necessary to install an excessively strong clamp — this increases the wear rate of the fittings and leads to deformation of the seal.

Pay attention! Sometimes even the strengthening of the clamp does not allow you to cope with drafts. Therefore, before starting the adjustment of the balcony door, it is worth carefully examining the seal. Damage, loss of elasticity or cracking of the sealing profile are the reasons for its replacement.

If the door is sagging

Sagging of the balcony door under its own weight leads to the fact that the lower corner of the door leaf touches the frame. If the hinges are of sufficient quality (there is a margin of safety) and the sagging is not catastrophic, then the problem is solved by adjustment quite easily:

• For vertical adjustment of the sash, an end screw on the lower hinge is used. First, the decorative overlay is removed, and then a hexagonal L-shaped key is installed in the screw on the upper end of the loop. When the key rotates clockwise, the sash rises, thereby eliminating sagging.
• You can adjust the horizontal position of the sash using the screw on the upper hinge. The sash opens in a pivoting position, then the L-shaped key is inserted into the screw at the end of the loop. The screw rotates clockwise — this allows you to align the sash, finally eliminating sagging.

Advice! Even if the first part of the recommendation helped to eliminate the problem, it is worth doing the second — with a more laborious adjustment of the upper loop. If this is not done, the sash will remain skewed and will soon require adjustment again.

How to eliminate mashing of the door leaf

The rubbing of the balcony door in the middle part is also eliminated by adjusting with the use of screws on hinges:

• First you need to lower the lower corner of the sash. To do this, the end screw of the lower loop is used — it is rotated counterclockwise.
• After that, you need to pull the lower corner of the door leaf to the lower hinge. To do this, the lower part of the decorative lining is removed and the side screw of the lower loop rotates.
• Similarly, the upper corner is attracted to the upper loop. To do this, use the end screw on this loop.

In this case, the sash, which was rubbed in the middle part, will shift towards the hinges. This is almost always enough to eliminate mashing.

Advice! As with the adjustment of window fittings, you need to act slowly and carefully. The screws should be turned no more than 1/2 turn and then the change in the position of the door leaf should be monitored.

The described algorithm for adjusting the balcony door does not always help. In some cases, the power reserve of the adjusting screws on the hinges may not be enough to align the sash due to its severe deformation or misalignment. If you encounter such a problem, you should contact a specialist in the maintenance of metal—plastic structures. Extensive work experience allows such masters to eliminate even quite complex deformations — for example, by adjusting a double-glazed window or by using other methods.

In addition, do not forget that balcony doors made of high-quality profile with high rigidity require adjustment much less often. The same applies to compliance with the installation rules: the better the balcony door is mounted, the fewer problems will arise during its operation. That's why you should listen to the recommendations of sales managers, and entrust the installation of the door to highly qualified craftsmen.
